Dr Roghieh Dehghan

Doctor, Researcher, Activist

As a graduate of the Medical School at the University of Vienna, I have practised as a doctor in both Austria and the UK. I am currently working part-time as a GP in North London while undertaking a PhD.

My academic career has focused on the health of marginalised populations. Early on (2008-11), my research projects revolved around palliative care in Bangladesh, where I also volunteered as a doctor in the slums of Dhaka.

Since 2012, my primary research area has been mental health and trauma in refugee population.

My NIHR Fellowship in 2016 examined the mental health impacts of sexual torture. This led to a Wellcome Clinical Research Fellowship from 2022 to the present, during which I am exploring the ethical and moral aspects of trauma and its association with mental health in Iranian refugee torture survivors in the UK.

“… if I could change one thing today, I would bring together all leading Iranian voices across political, religious, ethnic and class divisions to reckon, reconcile and create a wise and compassionate government by Iranian people, for Iranian people, one that allows this old civilisation to contribute to a better world, for everyone’s benefit.”
